Thomson and Thompson - some questions

I am enraptured by the Thompsons. And as such I have questions.

How did they meet?

Apparently they aren't related at all, so why do they always dress the same?

Are they the same character (interchangeable) or are there subtle differences between them besides the mustache thing?

I am enraptured by the Thompsons. Any light anyone can shed would be of utter interest.

I personally think that it is actually an unagreed on subject that the Thompsons are unrelated.
