Why on earth would the Thom(p)sons bring swim-suits to the desert in Land of Black Gold?

Also, he suddenly has a white sheet of cloth and a red piece which he makes into a desert hat thing.

A joke? This is a comic, after all.

he suddenly has a white sheet of cloth and a red piece
I always thought it was meant to be the remains of his other clothes - the "sheet" is from his shirt, and perhaps the "red piece" is from his jacket, or underwear, or even something from the crash-site...?

They're as mad as meat-axes perhaps? I mean look at their belongings which they try an take aboard when they are going 'undercover'... Their idea of what is appropriate in various situations is often ludicrous and based on foolish stereotypes and ill-advised generalisations.

Maybe they thought that they'd need swimming trunks because if there was sand in the desert then it was just like being at the beach, and therefore there would be swimming...
;)
