* Crosse and Blackwell are famous in the UK for their various food brands particularly Branston Pickle. Bross and Clackwell is a nice spoonerism on this devised by the English translators. -- Explanation and URL submitted by Chris Owens (aka Harrock n roll). An alternative explanation from reader Bernard Dammingh gives a plausible reason for why "Bross and Clackwell" might be appropriate to use for a joke about a hat, rather than for a food-related gag:
there is a French hat brand called Broswell. Quite rare - made in the south of France. A French word for hat is claque. Combined, this gives "Bross and Clackwell". The more funny, since this brand was launched after the war and wants to compete with the US Stetson. Therefore, Carreidas mentioning that his hat is from before the war and therefore extremely rare is very accurate and funny.
